In response, activists have organized community alert systems — including neighborhood hotlines and the distribution of whistles to be sounded when agents are seen.
In Bensonhurst, community leaders reported near-daily ICE presence in January 2026, with agents conducting early-morning stakeouts near the New Utrecht Avenue and 18th Avenue subway stations and outside apartment buildings, reportedly detaining blue-collar workers as they left for work. Council Member Susan Zhuang stated her office was receiving daily calls from multiple communities, "not only in the Spanish-speaking community."
