Full Description

I had just left the homeless shelter where I was staying. I left around 9:15 AM, after checking out for the day. I was planning to take a bus into Minneapolis. I was walking past the side of the Opportunity Center building on Old 6th Street. Across the street and down 1 block, is the bus stop that I used. I was preparing to walk across MN-5 to reach the station. As I was about to cross the street, I noticed 3 or 4 unmarked vehicles with out-of-state license plates. I noticed a Gray Van or SUV that had a New York license plate. It caused me to look closer as it was suspicious. As I was about to cross the street, the cars pulled up beside me and the passengers exited and surrounded me. There were about 7 agents. The agents pushed me back and told me that I could not keep going. So I asked them who they were, and they identified themselves as ICE. They asked me if I'm a US Citizen. I told him that I am. They asked me for my photo.I.D so I produced my Massachusetts ID, because I used to live in Massachusetts. After taking a picture of my I.D and hearing my explanations that i'm a US Citizen, have a US issued birth certificate, and provided my Social Security number, the agent said, "Okay, you're good. Have a good day." I politely replied, "You too. Have a nice day!" I kept walking after disengaging. That was the end of the incident.

I believe that I was face profiled and racially profiled by these agents period. I am a dark skinned Guatemalan man. However, I was adopted by US born Caucasian parents in 1989 at the age of 8 months and because of that, I have a US issued Birth Certificate and a Norwegian last name. I also don't have an Hispanic sounding accent. I have a Boston accent mixed with a slightly Midwest twaing. I'm originally from South Dakota, and during the whole interaction, The officers quizzed me about the Massachusetts ID. I explained to them that I'm from South Dakota. However, used to live in Massachusetts because I went to Boston College. When the officer heard that He asked me, "what year did you graduate?" I informed him 2023. At that point, after being convinced that I'm a legal US Citizen, the agent told me that i'm fine and let me go.

I believed that the best course of action since I have nothing to worry about, was to be polite and cooperative with the agents. That strategy worked. They were exceptionally polite to me too.
