2026-05-22 (Friday) — strike begins

  • ~300 of ~1,000 detainees launch a hunger and labor strike, refusing meals and withdrawing from the facility's ~$1/day work program.
  • At a launch rally strikers read a statement framing the action as a demand for "freedom," not better conditions; demands include release of the medically vulnerable, young and elderly, a full facility investigation, and a visit from Gov. Mikie Sherrill.
  • Continuous solidarity protests begin outside on Doremus Avenue.
