On the morning of April 22, 2025, federal immigration agents entered the Albemarle County General District Court in Charlottesville, Virginia, and detained two men who had recently attended court hearings.[1] Video footage shows the agents conducting the arrests inside or immediately outside the courthouse.
According to witness accounts and reporting, the agents were dressed in plain clothes, and at least one wore a face covering, leading to confusion among court staff and bystanders. Individuals present reported that they did not observe arrest warrants or federal credentials being presented prior to the detentions.[1]
One of the men detained was represented by a public defender at the time of his court appearance. Attorneys and court personnel stated they had not been informed in advance that immigration enforcement activity would take place at the courthouse.[3]
